About riding in France
France is the home of the Tour de France, with mountain passes in the Alps and Pyrenees, rolling countryside and quiet, well-surfaced roads. Mountain routes are usually clear from late spring to early autumn, and summer can be very hot in the south.
Estimated finish times
The route is about 132 miles. Here is the moving time at a steady average speed. It is a flat-ground baseline: climbing, wind, stops at aid stations and group riding all move the real number, so treat it as a starting range.
| Average speed | Moving time |
|---|---|
| 10 mph | 13h 10m |
| 12 mph | 10h 58m |
| 14 mph | 9h 24m |
| 16 mph | 8h 14m |
| 18 mph | 7h 19m |
Most recreational riders average 12–16 mph on rolling terrain in a group, and less on hilly routes.
