About riding in the United States
The United States offers nearly every kind of riding, from flat plains and coastal roads to steep mountain passes and desert, so conditions vary enormously by region and season. Check the specific terrain and typical weather for the area before choosing a target pace.
Estimated finish times
The route is about 85 miles. Here is the moving time at a steady average speed. It is a flat-ground baseline: climbing, wind, stops at aid stations and group riding all move the real number, so treat it as a starting range.
| Average speed | Moving time |
|---|---|
| 10 mph | 8h 30m |
| 12 mph | 7h 05m |
| 14 mph | 6h 04m |
| 16 mph | 5h 19m |
| 18 mph | 4h 43m |
Most recreational riders average 12–16 mph on rolling terrain in a group, and less on hilly routes.
